Úsáid agus Infheictheacht na Gaeilge ar na Meáin Chraolta: Plé
Mr. John Purcell:
There has been some discussion but it is necessary to look at it in the context of the licensing regime we face. As a result of a change in broadcasting regulation, which previously came under the remit of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and is now under the remit of Coimisiún na Meán, radio licences are now typically issued for ten years.
There have been delays in renewing some licences. A new approach in seeking stations to do more has been indicated by Coimisiún na Meán, but we have not heard the detail behind that. We will engage with the commission on that. In an overall media context, it is appropriate to contrast the environment we work in; it is regulated subject to contract and our business model has been disturbed by online social media and unregulated media, etc. As a broad principle, our general feeling is that quotas and prescriptive licensing is not the way forward. That is our general view, if that makes sense.
