Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Úsáid agus Infheictheacht na Gaeilge ar na Meáin Chraolta: Plé

Mr. Kevin Bakhurst:

It is an important point. I must apologise for speaking English. My Irish is a work in progress, but I am very early in that process.

The Deputy makes an important point. That is why, when we set out our strategic framework, a lot of it was around what could we move out of Dublin in areas such as production and different genres. We have talked about Cork in particular but the ambition is to make more programmes around the country outside of Dublin. When we went out to stakeholders, there was a warm welcome for that from those outside Dublin, so that remains part of the ambition. If we can deliver this strategy over the next five years, it is around enhancing the coverage we do outside of Dublin, starting with Cork but in other areas too. It is right to ask about how different voices are represented around the country, including politicians who are not in Dublin at weekends or parts of the week. That is part of the strategy we are looking at.
