Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality

General Scheme of the Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) (Amendment) Bill: Discussion

Mr. Drew Harris:

That is correct. The example of the destruction of public transport vehicles might be better. The individuals who engaged in that may, in fact, have engaged in earlier disorder and disruption at the scene and in other subsequent attacks. There is a hierarchy of offences committed and that is how we order our investigation. There is no question of asking who we recognise in the footage and what we can get them for. We are purposively pursuing the more serious offences and working our way through the full culpability of those individuals by, as the Cathaoirleach said, tagging them, seeing where they turn up next and what else they do. We hope then to arrive at a point where we can identify them.
