It took until 2009 for Dónal Óg Cusack to be the first openly gay GAA player and it took until 2009 for the first openly gay rugby player in the world, Gareth Thomas, to come out. We still have a situation in soccer where there is no openly gay player in the English Premier League and across all four of the top divisions in England, just young Jake Daniels from Blackpool Football Club has come out openly as gay. He is the only such player since Justin Fashanu. On the body of work ahead and the attitude changing that is needed, is Mr. Walsh hopeful or despondent this week in his views?
