Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Logainmneacha na Gaeltachta: Plé

Mr. Colin Bray:

Yes, I am confident because we only publish Irish placenames in Gaeltacht areas. We have developed advanced mapping systems. We automate the production of our mapping. We back our web services up with a gazetteer we maintain from Logainm.ie. On our publications, we only publish Irish placenames in Gaeltacht areas. We are very proud to be the authoritative source of cartographic product and record. When we look at the guidance note of the Official Languages Act 2003, as mentioned earlier, it applies to a mapping scale of 1:1 to 1:10,000. In Ordnance Survey Ireland, we go far beyond that. We apply that principle to all our mapping scales. All our mapping services are governed by a set of computer rules and they only show Irish placenames in Gaeltacht areas.
