Mr. Donald Ewing:

Young people with dyslexia, being neurodiverse, often have a range of other issues. It is well recognised that the way we diagnose or talk about specific conditions is that they are rather silent or a wee bit arbitrary. Individuals with dyslexia often have difficulties with timekeeping. They may arrive in the classroom with the wrong stuff. All of this puts them under additional stress. Our parents, our members, who have lived with dyslexia and are now supporting their children will say it is not as simple as just reading and writing. Other issues come into play. There is considerable literacy, even in subjects such as maths nowadays, and we have to interpret the literacy to get to the arithmetic or numbers. Throughout the school day, young people are working under a significant amount of stress. What we know can help them is making accommodations or an exemption. It is just one thing in a range of ways that schools and education systems can make changes.
