Díolúintí i leith Staidéar na Gaeilge sa Mheánscolaíocht: Plé (Atógáil)
Ms Gr?inne O'Rourke:
Gabh mo leithscéal but I would like to add to that. We are a charitable organisation. We do not have the resources to do that kind of statistical analysis and research. There are other types of research that are more important to our core function. I emphasise that we are not against Irish. For us, the issue is dyslexia. As the Deputy said himself, there is a spectrum. Some people who are low down on that spectrum may be capable and happy to do Irish in conjunction with English and perhaps a third language. However, the focus of our discussion today is those young people who are high on the spectrum and who have genuine difficulties. This is part of the confusion that arises around dyslexia. People who do not have first-hand knowledge of it think it is a way for students to get out of subjects because of the historical challenges around learning Irish, maths or other core subjects. It is not about that. It is about genuine need in the context of learning difficulty.
