Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government

Private Rental Sector: Discussion

Mr. Brendan Allen:

I will comment on that. It is something we touched on earlier on. It will not necessarily solve the problem, but I think a tax relief should be available to people carrying out renovations. They should have, not a capital allowance that is over eight months, a relief that is immediately available to them in order that they can partially recover some of the costs involved. That would be an incentive. It would not necessarily solve the problem that has been identified. However, it is better to do something, such as a tax relief like that, than not. In Cork city, there already is a scheme like that. However, the property would have to have been built before 1905. Many properties being built currently or that were built after 1905 do not qualify for that renovation relief. If that could be extended, it would be beneficial and could contribute to a solution.
