Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action
Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Discussion
Mr. Bill Callanan:
We have always cautioned that while the Government can grease the wheel in terms of these measures, it is difficult to run the wheel. There has to be an underlying economic return. For example, we supported miscanthus previously but the market did not respond to it. In the calculation of the economic return of anaerobic digestion, it is important that there is a return to the farmers in terms of production of grass and at a price point that is viable. I have seen proposals where it makes sense but at an unrealistic price for the likes of the feedstock. We must be cautious about that.
