Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality

Recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed)

Ms Emer Neville:

To answer the Deputy's first question on what we would like to see regarding the future of RSE, in our report on senior cycle reform, one in three students stated they did not receive RSE and some students did not receive it fully and comprehensively. The ultimate goal is to get to a number where all students have received RSE and there is never a case where a student is not receiving a fully comprehensive RSE curriculum. By "fully comprehensive", I mean an RSE curriculum where students are learning about consent, all forms of gender-based violence and sex education, not just heterosexuality but all the diversities in that, such as different identities and so on. At present, from what we see, students are not receiving any RSE. They are getting free classes in school or they are getting study classes and it is just being ignored at present.
