Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Foilsitheoireacht agus Léitheoireacht na Gaeilge: Plé (Atógáil)

Ms Sarah Bannan:

The Cathaoirleach asked this very question about the breakdown and if it was possible to provide this. We can break our funding down in a variety of different ways and there is another report I can run that just looks at what is exclusively Irish language literature, and there are organisations that work exclusively that way. However, there are also a number of organisations, such as Poetry Ireland, which I mentioned earlier, and Children's Books Ireland would be another. Poetry Ireland runs a journal and it has an Irish-language editor, and there is no way of breaking that funding apart to say this part is the English-language part and that part is the Irish-language part. This work is core to what it does. In the strategy we are trying to set out a number of different ways in which we will try to do this. In respect of those organisations which are national - stop me if I am repeating what the Deputy has heard already - and have a resource remit, we are looking for minimum and best practice standards from them.

For organisations within our strategic funding programme, we have higher expectations as to what they are doing around a variety of areas. If this relates to a literature organisation, we would expect that it would be working through the Irish language also unless there is some sort of compelling reason as to why-----
