Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health
Review of the Operation of the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018: Discussion
David Cullinane (Waterford, Sinn Fein) | Oireachtas source
According to these data, one in ten GPs is providing abortion services. That is shocking. I thought it would have been much more than that. Only 7% of GPs who provide care to the general public are registered with the My Options service. That is even less than 10%. Half of counties have fewer than ten GPs offering the service, but that is not the worst of it, given that there is a range. As Ms O'Connor pointed out, the figure could be as low as one GP in some counties. Before I ask about the reason for this, perhaps she could speak about its impact, particularly in rural areas but also in some urban areas. If women have difficulty in accessing abortion services through GPs, what impact does that have on the women and their ability to go on to access full services?
