Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy

Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Assisted Human Reproduction Coalition

Ms Selina Bonnie:

Just briefly, in response to the Senator's question about why Ireland and other countries have not gone through this process yet, I wish to point out that it is not unusual for Ireland to lead the way, especially from a legislative, human rights or equality point of view. The human rights and equality part of the US Constitution was based on Bunreacht na hÉireann and what we did. We have had a right to Irish Sign Language since 2017 in this country, whereas the UK is only starting to have that discussion now. Why not let Ireland continue to be a leader in good practice, equality and human rights? We have done it before and we are respected for it.
