Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality
Recommendations of Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed)
Mr. Seán Cooke:
That discussion on refuge and what we mean about it being fit for purpose is critical. It is about the inclusivity of all aspects of provision, whether it be women or men. As was said, we do not have provision in place for men. We do not think it is a requirement to have a dedicated refuge for men but others might have a different opinion on that. We think there are much more appropriate wrap-around services and that client support systems are the way to go forward. When we talk about refuge, whether it be the model of compliance and governance or whether it is delivery, we need to have a broad discussion on it. I would fully concur with what Ms McDermott and our friends from AkiDwA said.
