Impact of Covid-19 on Neurological Services, Care and Capacity: Neurological Alliance of Ireland

Professor Orla Hardiman:

With ring-fenced funding that could come from the various different funding pots. The difficulty is that one would have to establish that the money is coming from those funding pots. This has happened in the delivery of medications through hospitals for multiple sclerosis. We do have a ring-fenced budget that is administered through the primary care reimbursement service. It is possible to do that where the hospitals contribute a small amount of money and there is no rationing any more of the multiple sclerosis drugs, which there used to be ten or 15 years ago. There is a wherewithal to do it if we have the will to do it. It is really important because these are complex conditions and if we rely on the individual budgets within the local sectors, there is a very high likelihood of failure for the delivery of care for these people, unfortunately.
