Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

Hospital Doctor Retention and Motivation Project: Discussion

Dr. Niamh Humphries:

Yes, they are working much longer hours and longer shifts. They are not taking breaks. They struggle to have time to go to the toilet during shifts and struggle to find time to drink water and eat meals. They are not minding themselves at all. They cannot, because there is so much work for them to do and too few of them to do it. It is important to compare hospital doctors and their working conditions with other professions, where this just would not be acceptable. It should not be acceptable for hospital doctors either. Ultimately, they have to care for us and none of us wants to go into the hospital knowing that the hospital doctor seeing us is exhausted and hungry. We can do better.
