Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government

Social and Affordable Housing: Discussion

Mr. Bob Jordan:

To be clear about the number of roles we have on Limerick city and county, we have a projects and procurement team within the agency that provides technical supports to both local authorities and approved housing bodies, AHBs. We have been helping a number of voluntary housing associations in the area, including ADAPT, Croom, Cappamore, Focus Ireland and so on. We also have land in Limerick and have transferred some of that to Limerick City and County Council, Clúid Housing and so on. That is another way of supporting delivery. The other thing is the €70 million acquisitions fund I mentioned earlier. We have been acquiring properties that have been provided for social housing there both directly on behalf of the local authorities and on behalf of AHBs.

Those are our particular functions but Deputy O'Donoghue can see that, going forward, we will have a role with this town centre first policy and certainly we will be supporting local authorities and AHBs to help reanimate towns and villages, including bringing vacant and derelict commercial and residential buildings back into use.
