Committee on Public Petitions

Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments

Mr. Michael Barrett:

Okay. Let us forget about that. There is a certain amount of passive support for this development. In other words, it is being approached with a nod and a wink. People say that it will be all right and we should let them develop away. They ask what harm it is doing to anybody. That should be looked into. Politicians and other public representatives should be very careful in the statements they make or even their use of a place such as that. Public representatives using a place like that gives it a certain amount of legality. It gives the impression that it is okay because they would not be using it otherwise. Basically, I am making that point as a result of a particular person using it and going public about doing so. People have come back to me several times since then, asking me what I am doing. I have been asked that if it is all right for a Minister to use it, is it not all right for everybody else to use it?
