Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters
Aligning Disability Services with the UNCRPD and Considering Future Innovation and Service Provision: Discussion ^

I have one question in relation to the idea of the family caring. There seems to be a mishmash of services and breakdowns of services and no joined up thinking. For example, when a young couple is told their child has autism or is diagnosed with something, they find it very hard to access the services. They do not understand where they need to go. There does not seem to be a communication network where one step leads to another step and there is a clear pathway. They go to see somebody and get an assessment and think that is it. Then they realise they have to go some place else but are not told that. They have to do all of this with the trauma of coming to terms with everything that might be happening to their child. What should be implemented so that the services, especially for children, are co-ordinated in a way that can be brought into adulthood for people who have special needs? I presume this is the whole area of co-ordination and leadership. Even accessing the information seems to be a problem. I am just throwing that out as well.
