Four-Day Working Week: Discussion

Mr. Andrew Barnes:

The reality is different countries apply different solutions. It depends on the structural issues they have. We now see India is implementing a restriction to the working week but that is based on a very high level, while Japan is doing something different. The key thing is the bulk of legislation on work, internationally, is based on time and, therefore, there is inadvertent discrimination against companies trying to bring things in. In my country, New Zealand, we have to accrue holiday on the day we gift people off. The best solutions we are seeing globally are where government looks to get rid of those inadvertent barriers to introducing a flexible or a four-day week.
