Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community
Cláir Ghaeilge: RTÉ
Ms Dee Forbes:
I will answer that question for the Senator. First of all, the decision as to what language the ads are made in is down to the client, whether it is Bus Éireann or Procter & Gamble. They make that decision. From watching TG4, there are some ads in Irish but we receive very few requests to air ads in Irish on RTÉ. It is completely down to the brand or the company itself to decide what they want to do. Quite often, particularly in the Irish market, advertisers are probably faced or forced to take what is coming in from other markets because the cost of creating another ad is prohibitive for a market as small as here. This is a question for the marketing community and what they can and cannot do in this space, but there are very few brands which create specific Irish language ads at this time.
