Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community
Cláir Ghaeilge: RTÉ
Ms Dee Forbes:
In terms of the overall organisation, it is fair to say we have some issues with resources across the board. We have been on a headcount reduction for a number of years to reduce costs. It is not easy in the current climate. As the Deputy knows, our funding has reduced significantly in the past ten years. We are down €100 million in revenue compared with before. Therefore, the organisation has had to do things differently. We have had to reduce staff numbers, and that is across the board. It is likewise with resourcing. There are a number of areas in the organisation where, if I could, I would add resources but I cannot at present.
On the question of whether Raidió na Gaeltachta should be independent from RTÉ, that is probably not for me to say. I would hope Raidió na Gaeltachta benefits from being part of the wider RTÉ organisation, and I will ask Gearóid Mac Donncha to elaborate on that. There are a number of aspects, whether they be access to stories or resources, that perhaps might not be possible if it was not part of the wider organisation.
