Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters

Participation of People with Disabilities in Political, Cultural, Community and Public Life: Discussion (Resumed)

Ms Lianne Quigley:

I was unemployed for a few months just before Covid-19 hit. I went to the Intreo service. I realised that when it comes to access for deaf people it is terrible. Luckily, I have the ability to communicate. I was able to have ISL interpreters provided and I was able to send emails. When it comes to public websites it can be quite difficult to find email addresses. Often people have to either phone a number or send a letter. The Irish remote interpreting service can relay and interpret phone calls but something that needs to be included when it comes to providing feedback is that there needs to be a clear email address that can be used. At present, there is not 100% access to employment services for deaf people who sign.
