Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters

Participation of People with Disabilities in Political, Cultural, Community and Public Life: Discussion (Resumed)

Ms Elaine Grehan:

I thank the Deputy for her question. When it comes to access, I will have to try to select just one example. When people are going to the cinema, they have plenty of different choices as to what to see. However, a deaf person can only choose what has been subtitled. Much of the time, that is just one film. It very much depends on the cinema. That is a general example of access. When it comes to going to a restaurant or trying to order a sandwich, communication barriers can arise. Even basic things such as devices being controlled by voice or having sounds but no visual representation when accessing physical buildings can cause issues. Even with speakers, much of the time things are operated only through spoken language with no access through sign language. I hope those examples are enough. Ms Quigley will add to that response.
