Courts and Courthouses: Discussion

Ms Angela Denning:

That work is under way but there are a lot of factors. Our road network, for example, has improved over the past two decades, which has reduced travel time. A total of 97% of the population live within one hour's drive of a county town courthouse and most people live within 30 minutes' drive of a district court office or county town courthouse. That will affect some of the decisions that need to be taken into the future. However, to take as an example the court in Achill, which is far from the next town and has a low case count, the distances required and the public transport infrastructure in the area mean it may prove impossible to close that court.
