Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health
Mental Health Services: Discussion
Ms Fiona Coyle:
Mental Health Reform is a coalition and many of our members - the Senator mentioned the Samaritans and others - provide those services. However, the main point of contact for someone with a mental health difficulty still remains the GP. That is why investment in primary care is so important. Currently, if someone goes to his or her GP, he or she is referred to a waiting list. Some people are waiting more than a year. A year is a long time when you are waiting for support. Different initiatives are needed, but that investment in primary care would be something we would emphasise.
