Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community
Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (Resumed)
Ms Sinéad Gibney:
I will add some further detail with regard to Deputy Ellis's question on the involvement of Traveller groups in the equality review process. We engaged with approximately 40 representatives from local groups and held a briefing session ahead of the publication of the data we released just last Wednesday. We are going to follow that up with further engagement with those groups now that they have had a chance to digest it. The reason we are investing in that exercise is that the nature of this power is that it is a persuasive power and an enforcement power. The information we gathered from the local authorities was given to us by those local authorities. As has been identified, there was a real lack of participation from and engagement with the local Traveller communities. It is really important that those communities, groups, families and people now look at the information that has been gathered and validate it, interrogate it and use it for their own campaigning and advocacy work. It is important to build on it. That is important to us and that is why we chose to put it out into the public domain at this stage. We will continue to engage with those groups and to provide any support that we can to help them to use this information to the best effect.
