Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence
Emigrant Support Services: Discussion
Mr. Ciarán Staunton:
Ms Kennelly has covered the issue well. We had a hearing in the Oireachtas last year. We had some meetings in Galway. We have met a number of Ministers on the issue. Some progress has been made but in the light of what is going on at the moment and given the fact that people are still coming back, I think the Government needs to take another run at the issue. The Government needs to look at it from the point of view that those are Irish people who are returning. They have been away for a while but they are not foreigners. They are Irish people and their children, as one of the committee members mentioned. I would like the committee to look at this issue after the summer when the Oireachtas returns after the recess. The committee should look at this issue again and ask how to make the transition easier.
