Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government
General Scheme of Local Government (Directly Elected Mayor with Executive Functions in Limerick City and County) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed)
Professor Deiric Ó Broin:
The question was on the link between a mayor, citywide policy and elections. Anybody running for mayor would need a clearly articulated policy or set of policies for the city and county. What tends to happen in local elections is that the person running for election does not run for a city or county-wide election and he or she has a local focus. What we expect to see is candidates for directly elected mayor articulating coherent or at least a vision for Limerick city and county. That has not been the case to date.
