Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Curaclam Nua na hArdteistiméireachta (Atógáil): Plé

Mr. David Duffy:

I will give the Senator what is officially the case but I must emphasise there is a bit of movement around the edges. In essence, a T1 school is a school in a Gaeltacht region or an Irish language school in a non-Gaeltacht region. However, around the boundaries of a region you get into the question of what is a T1 school. If a school operates through the Irish language but a lot of the students live outside the Gaeltacht, and that is their nearest school but they do not speak the Irish language at home, you get into the realm of the more difficult elements of what is, to use the Senator’s question, a T1 school versus a T2 school. It is around the boundaries that things start to get complicated.
