Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Forestry Issues: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Mr. Colm Hayes:

On the first point about the recruitment of ecologists and streamlining the process, the Senator suggested that we refer back in writing with more detail. I am happy to do that. We have significantly bulked up our ecology resources from one 12 to 18 months ago to 21 working on this now. It is a massive investment on our part in environmental compliance. Streamlining the process is back-office stuff, to be honest, but I have no problem with outlining some of the detail because it is impactful in terms of output. There is nothing particularly exciting about it. There is no game changer, but it is all part of the process of continuous improvement when it comes to licensing.

On Bord na Móna and Coillte, I addressed this in the opening statement and I would be happy to supply more information. I suggest direct engagements with Bord na Móna and Coillte as well, if that is of interest. We can certainly give as much information as possible on the pilot scheme we have launched on this, which both agencies intend to use. A site visit would be excellent and could easily be facilitated when the Covid restrictions lift.

Have I dealt with everything?
