Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht

General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2020: Discussion (Resumed)

Ms Olga Cronin:

To follow up on Mr. Herrick's point earlier and the question about what can be done straightaway, Ms Sarah Fitzgerald from Kinsale Community School told the committee that we must build resilience because cyberbullying will not just go away if we enact legislation. She said they needed to have tools to cope. It is an excellent point and one that should be supported. She and her schoolmate, Ms Megan Fahy, spoke in detail about measures being taken in their school to combat cyberbullying. They also suggested that sixth class pupils be spoken to before they go into secondary school. They said the problem mostly relates to first to third year pupils. They had some excellent suggestions for the immediate term, including talking about cyberbullying in the social and personal health education class. It is worth reiterating their points because they were very good.
