General Scheme of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2020: Discussion (Resumed)
Annie Hoey (Labour) | Oireachtas source
I think this is the second day I have been at a committee meeting with the ICCL. It is doing the Lord's work coming in and out to meet with us. I have just two questions. Perhaps they are not straightforward but they will be pretty quick. Ms Cronin talked about the collateral effect and the Bill going beyond the scope required. Is the Bill in need of specific reforms or are we going about this in entirely the wrong way? That question is probably throwing the cat among the pigeons from a political perspective, but are we not necessarily getting this right?
Second, is what is broadly proposed in the Bill a human rights approach to online regulation? Are we meeting the human rights requirements or are we not? If not, what do we need to do to resolve that?
