Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union

New and Future Relationship Between the UK and Ireland: Discussion

Mr. Dáithí O'Ceallaigh:

I will add a bit to that. The Senator said he went over to the House of Lords. I must say I find it difficult to imagine him being intimidated by anybody. The work done on Brexit by the committees in the House of Lords during the past four or five years was astonishing. One of the reasons is that people in the House of Lords do not have to seek re-election and can, therefore, apply themselves and their expertise in a way that is much more difficult for a person who is seeking re-election.

If the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad is of such of view, I think it is very good because it is scrutiny we need and before the thing becomes law. After it becomes law, we can do nothing about it.
