Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health
Update on the Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic: National Public Health Emergency Team
Dr. Ronan Glynn:
Those we are primarily monitoring and about which we are primarily concerned are P.1, which was identified in Brazil, and B.1.351, which was first identified in South Africa. To be clear, we are also concerned about B.1.1.7, which is the dominant variant in the country, because further mutations of this variant are now emerging internationally. There have also been one or two cases of additional mutations here. Other variants include P.2 and P.3, which were first identified in the United States, B.1.525 and B.1.526. There is a whole range of variants of concern and variants under investigation but the principal variants here, in terms of numbers of cases, are P.1 and B.1.351.
