Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation

General Scheme of Employment Permits (Consolidation and Amendment) Bill 2019: Discussion (Resumed)

Mr. Cormac Healy:

It is a threshold that is set for those general operative permits. There is also a rate of €27,500 set for the skilled knifeman permits. I said earlier that this pay is comparable with starting points for general operatives coming in. There are opportunities within the sector to progress in pay rates, both in experience and skill. The Senator holds that view but I have to go back to the point that we are competing. We are comparable with our nearest neighbours and competitors in Northern Ireland and Great Britain, as I described them. That is the environment in which we must also compete in supplying product to the same customers.
