Committee on Budgetary Oversight
Stability Programme Update: Economic and Social Research Institute
Dr. Karina Doorley:
Members of our labour market and skills team might be better placed to answer questions like this. Broadly speaking, it seems like education will form a very important part of the recovery from Covid because jobs are changing and have changed already. Some industries may be less viable than they once were. I am not sure that the proposition of just knocking out fees will make much of a difference without addressing shortages of teachers and so on. If everyone goes to further or higher education, we will not have enough places available for them. I suppose what the Deputy is talking about is a complete overhaul of the education system. That is worth having a discussion about but I cannot give a great answer. Other members of the institute would be better placed.
