Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government
General Scheme of the Affordable Housing Bill 2020: Discussion (Resumed)
Mr. Declan Dunne:
We are familiar with people having indefinite tenures in the 28,000 tenancies the approved housing bodies have now. Not only do these people have lifetime homes in perpetuity, but if their children qualify under the income criteria, they can also live in those homes, and that is our intention. The wonderful thing about the model is that the houses are paid for once and that cost might be repaid over 25 years, and then those homes are available at no additional cost in the remaining 75 years, except for maintenance. Our perspective then when it comes to cost rental is that we would like these properties to be available in perpetuity and that the tenure should not be limited.
