Public Accounts Committee

2019 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 21 - Prisons
Chapter 7 – Catering and Ancillary Services in Prisons

11:30 am

Ms Caron McCaffrey:

They are purchased by the prisoners themselves through the tuck shop so they are the property of the prisoner. Prisoners receive gratuities while they are in custody. They are also supported by their families and, on average, prisoners receive between €20 and €30 a week into their personal accounts from family members. Prisoners would have to save to purchase an Xbox. They would purchase it through the tuck shop and it would be their property. When prisoners leave custody, they take their property with them unless they decide to give items of property to other people who are remaining in custody. That would be the normal practice.
