Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport

Issues Affecting the Aviation Sector: Discussion (Resumed)

Dr. Tony Holohan:

NPHET and I have to reflect on the current level of risk. At this point, the real issue from our point of view - I am not avoiding the Deputy's question - is the high level of domestic community transmission in this country.

That is where all our attention and focus are right now. What I said in my opening statement, and I will say it again, is that as we move, I hope, and I am being optimistic about this, to curb, slow and ultimately re-establish full control over this disease, then the question of international travel, which has been on our agenda from the get-go - and the Deputy will, I am sure, be well familiar with the various recommendations we have made over the entire course of the pandemic - will begin to assume, relatively speaking, greater importance. If the risk of picking up the disease in this country is very low because we have managed to control community transmission, then the obvious additional source of infection is through international travel.
