Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action

General Scheme of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2020: Discussion (Resumed)

Professor Yvonne Buckley:

The Deputy's first point related to the importance of research for nature-based solutions, such as the rewetting of peatlands, in particular. This a very important area on which we need more data. Nature-based solutions are local context dependent, so we need to know how different actions that we take, such as the retwetting of peatlands or planting forests on different kinds of soil types, perform in our conditions, climate and soils with the kinds of species in the ecosystems around them. Therefore, we need research funded in Ireland in order to make these nature-based solutions better, and to effectively monitor them, and be able to demonstrate the impact of these nature-based solutions-----
