Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality
Access to Justice and Legal Costs: Discussion (Resumed)
Mr. Fergal O'Leary:
I absolutely agree with the Deputy. My colleagues from the LSRA cited communication issues as being one of the main factors that prompt complaints to them. When consumers are seeking to engage the services of a solicitor, they need to be upfront about what they are looking for, and in return, the solicitor needs to give a reasonable expectation of how much this will cost. I think that remains an issue and prompts many complaints. That interaction at the start is not clear enough on both sides.
