Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): Roinn Dlí agus Cirt agus Comhionannais

Mr. Donncha Ó Súilleabháin:

I agree that we look at what learnings derive from the scheme. My sense is that the scheme has been largely successful in meeting the needs that we have. I expect that the main things we will need to do with the next version of the scheme will be to reflect the changed legislative environment, but to reflect also the changes that have taken place, in particular more recently within our own Department. I mentioned these in my opening remarks.

The Chairman will be familiar from the presentation of our Secretary General that we now have a whole transparency function that is about communication, engagement and awareness rating. A key question will be how those people should be positioned to deliver all of those things as Gaeilge as much as as Béarla. That is likely to be the focus.

As Mr. Ó Cearúil has mentioned, the area of forms is clearly one that has been prioritised in the legislation and is something that we will take up. I expect we will also look at some of the types of communications that are different since the time of the first scheme. We were probably dabbling in social media when the first scheme came into being. That has clearly all changed now. We need to look at how we engage in those sorts of environments.
