Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality

Access to Justice and Legal Costs: Discussion (Resumed)

Ms Rose Wall:

They are filling the gap. It is because of the areas of law we work in and the type of work we do, but also because of how we do it. We go out to communities and go where the people are. It depends on how comprehensive civil legal aid can be. It depends on whether there is going to be a need in the future. In reality, would it not be great if there was no need for individual community law centres that have to fundraise for their activities and do not have any security around that? Would it not be great if we had a proper comprehensive State scheme for that? It depends on how comprehensive it can be going forward.
