Cycling Policy: Discussion

Between 2009 and 2013, road fatalities of cyclists averaged seven per year. Between 2014 and 2018 the figure was 11 per year, so the trend for cyclist deaths is up while it is significantly down for road users as a whole. The number of road fatalities in 2009 was 238, compared with 142 last year. That includes pedestrians. The point by the witness is very well made but cyclists are undoubtedly at a particular risk.

I referred earlier to the cyclist injury report and collision data from 2008 to 2016 that is due early next month. It would be important to have representatives of the Road Safety Authority before us to discuss that. We will learn much from that as I understand it goes into every reported injury and fatality and we can get a really clear picture of what more we need to do.
