Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport

Cycling Policy: Discussion

Ms Deirdre Hanlon:

No. It is comes under our Department. We examined the greenways programme a few years ago, which is on the travel and transport side. While it comprises cycling and walking infrastructure, its focus is not on transport as such. It is not about getting somebody from one place to another. People are not travelling on them with that type of purpose, as if they were commuting. It is about having a local amenity for communities and a good strong tourism product for certain rural areas. It is led on the tourism side but that does not mean it is divorced from what we are doing with respect to cycling. We have a connection with them. We deal with issues of common and mutual interest and topicality and we keep in touch with what is happening.
