Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community

Traveller Education: Discussion (Resumed)

Mr. Martin Collins:

Not in any in-depth way, again because we do not have the resources or the staff to do the work. We had an education programme up until a year and a half ago. It was funded by an independent trust for three years. We had three staff on that education programme and they engaged quite extensively with the stakeholders in this arena. When we had that programme, we had a lot of in-service training in St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra - the teacher training college. Some of the people concerned may have been career guidance counsellors but I am open to correction on that. My overall point is we do not have the capacity. It is as simple as that. We do not have the resources or the staff to do what we would like to do. That is the bottom line.
