Public Accounts Committee

2018 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 22: Courts Service

9:00 am

Ms Angela Denning:

There are four options in Tralee. We could refurbish the existing courthouse, which is the middle of the town. I do not think it will be possible to provide a full range of services if we do that. We are looking at acquiring an adjacent town centre site. Again, we do not think we can get a site at a price that is good value for money for the taxpayer, which is a difficulty. We could build a new courthouse outside the town.

The Department of Defence has a site at Ballymullen, which has been considered. Alternatively, Kerry County Council has a town centre site known as the Island of Geese, which is our preferred option. The council is developing a master plan for the site and we have sought another meeting with it in order to progress that further. We bought the courthouse in Roscommon from the council last year or the year before along with an extra plot of land.
