Public Accounts Committee

2018 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 22: Courts Service

9:00 am

Ms Angela Denning:

We do not, for example, have facilities within the Children Court building to have a jury trial involving a child. Unfortunately, we foresee this as being a requirement into the future. We have had a number of such trials in recent years, for which we made arrangements in the CCJ, but, ideally, we would like to operate everyting in the one building in which we would have appropriate facilities for the children involved in cases. The legislation indicates that children and adults should not mix. To date, we have had to make special arrangements for jury trials involving children. Ideally, we would like to operate everything within the one building in which we would have better control and the risks would be lower.
