Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality
General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion
Mr. Robert Purcell:
Those are consultations with prosecution lawyers who are primarily concerned with the prosecution. The Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) Act 2017 has assisted in the provision of information, but those lawyers do not give people specific legal advice tailored to them and their individual situations, as it is not within their remit to do so. These people are victims, as stated in the legislation but, as Deputy O'Callaghan said, they are also witnesses in the State's case against the accused.
